CREATIVE GOALS
This project seeks to rethink the 16mm Academy Leader for 21st Century Design. While using technical concepts of film leaders, the project will recontextualize how we use film leaders to communicate a message to the public in the present day.

CONCEPTUAL GENERATION METHODOLOGY
The overall concept of this project draws from the traditional sequence of the film leader. Elements like the countdown and clockwise transitions all add the to look of a film leader. The storytelling tool in Ellen Lupton’s Design is Storytelling (2017) was used to generate the theme of “political activism.” The film leader shows ways of being an effective activist in a sequence. The technical inspirations of this project were newspaper cutouts and political activism infographics from social media.

RATIONALE
For this project, I created a film leader that re-envisions how we use them for 21st Century Design. The theme of this film leader is political activism, which is an area that much of traditional graphic design has covered. However, I wanted the film leader to touch upon the value of social media and quick videos to communicate messages to the wider public.
The visual design of this film leader draws from the imperfect graphics and contrasting elements in contemporary media like Vox Media and Vice News. The technical aspects of the film leader, such as the quick countdown and captivating elements, also supported the idea of sharing information as quickly as possible. The final result pays homage to the traditional film leader while utilizing methods of communication that is critical in today’s current media.
